    Sebastien Fontaine

    Sebastien Fontaine

    Goodyear

My name is Sébastien Fontaine and I was born in August 1979 in Ettelbrück, Luxembourg, which means I just passed the 40 years milestone…

I got my graduation (Bac) at the Lycée Technique Ettelbrück in the branch “Technique General”.

As Design and Art always took a major part of my life starting very young, I did a Master’s degree in Industrial Designer graduating from Strate School of Design, Paris. With this, I decided to turn my  passion into a job by learning drawing, painting, sculpting, graphic design, product design, global design, 3D Modeling, design methodologies like Design Thinking, Intuitive Technology, Visual Communication, Branding and all the incredible software available to a Designer’s job. Of course, I had the chance to visit plenty of art museums and exhibitions during my time in Paris. Hence I discovered my passion for paintings and sculptures like those from Joseph M. W. Turner, Henry Moore, Salvador Dali, Alberto Giacometti, Pierre Soulages and many more.

During my studies, I had the opportunity to do several internships and summer time jobs at the Goodyear Innovation Center Luxembourg where my father was working as a Tire Engineering Manager. This led to also include a 5 months internship at the Advanced Design Studio Goodyear Innovation Center Akron, Ohio.

Shortly after my graduation in 2005, I was hired by Goodyear to integrate the Advanced Design Studio at the Goodyear Innovation Center Luxembourg. Moving from Industrial Designer, Associate Designer, Staff Designer, Senior Designer, I was promoted Lead Designer in 2019 after 14 years of dedicated and passionate services.

My task at the Advanced Design Studio covers both Applied Technologies, which means working on up-coming production tires, and futuristic visions. I always like to challenge the status quo internally and externally and develop with the Design Team futuristic concepts getting global visibility through all kind of media help to inspire the world and push the boundaries of what is possible today. I am excessively curious, using out of the box thinking and empathy to ideate and design products and services which are based on today’s and future trends. I always start from a societal problem or change to ideate and design solutions, which ultimately aims to make people’s life better and easier.

Here some examples of creations of concepts that did generate huge interest throughout the automotive industry and obtained various Design Awards:

    Goodyear Eagle 360 Concept 2016:
    https://youtu.be/oSFYwDDVgac

Goodyear Eagle 360 Urban Concept 2017:

    Goodyear reCharge Concept 2020:
    https://youtu.be/ziMVIZPu2XU

With the design team, I also created many concept tires tailored to fit concept cars from many prestigious Car Manufacturers. They are the result of great collaborations with renowned Automotive Design Teams from all over the world, which are pieces of inspirations helping me to continuously extend my expertise in design and keep it up to date trend wise. I had the chance to also work with some of my classmates from Design School, as some of them are working at management level of renowned car companies. These were also great moments for me that I will never forget.

Apart from the future research activities, the biggest part of my job is to design tomorrow’s production products from initial idea, throughout the development together with the engineers up to the best way to market it. I work on marketing activities around product and brand identity at strategy level. I have the chance to work on all products from the Goodyear, Dunlop & associated brands portfolio of Europe, Middle-East, Africa & Asia Pacific. This covers all tire segments from passenger, light truck, truck and motorcycle and all tire applications like summer, winter, all seasons and Nordics.

Throughout my career, I worked on 96 released products, 32 concept tires and I hold more than 100 patents. I was internally awarded 8 times ‘Inventor of the Year’ throughout my career.

I also had the chance to act as a jury member of Mobility Design Graduation programs of the Strate School of Design, Paris and of Rubika Design School, Valenciennes.

Beside my profession which is also my passion, I enjoy life with my lovely wife, our 8 years young daughter and our 2 years young son. I am also part of our family business Oa6 Wellness in Oberfeulen, Luxembourg, for which I also enjoyed modelling and designing its interior.

I like 1940-1960 US cars while owning a Chevy Pick-Up from 1949. By the way, I like the music of the same years from Rock’n’roll, Rockabilly throughout any Blues music.
